Mid Carolina Radio

WPCM

What became known as WPCM got its start as WBBB-FM in December 1946. The station was originally on 101.3 with 3800 watts of power, but moved to 101.1 by l949. We don't know if the move was made to allow for future power increases or to protect an adjacent channel. Broadcasting Yearbook ofen did not even list FM stations in the late 40s. Later power was increased to 28.3 kilowatts and eventually to 100 kilowatts. The call letters changed to WNCB and the format was Beautiful Music for a number of years.  In 1978, a decision was made to convert to country music, and the station changed its call letters to WPCM.  Popular morning man Buddy Michaels was the first Program Director and the station was a top rated country outlet for years.

Today the 101.1 FM frequency in Burlington is occupied by Curtis Media’s La Ley 101.1 WZTK-FM. Offices and studios are still located on Tower Drive where WBBB and WPCM operated together for many years. The WPCM call letters  are being used on 920, the location of Burlington's first radio station, WBBB. In 2013, WPCM added WPCM-FM, an FM translator at 95.1.
